Last night we attended Fashion 2.0. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Fashion 2.0 is an event hosted by Style Coalition and supported by LIM – the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising – in New York. It’s a great way to meet interesting people in the fashion industry including everyone from designers, bloggers, PR reps, social media managers, and industry leaders. Read more about it here.
Last night’s panel included the social media managers of DKNY, Bergdorf Goodman, and Kate Spade. Hearing about how these ground-breaking fashion companies use their social media channels was very engaging. This whole “social media revolution” is new for everyone so there was a lot of discussion from the panelists about experimentation, being unsure, and sometimes failing but getting back in the game with a strong effort afterwards. It just sort of made us realize that this whole thing is up in the air; even for the industry leaders .
The event took place at LIM’s Maxwell Hall on E. 45th Street.

Here are some responses from the speakers about how they use social media:
Q. What is the strategy behind your online personality?
A. Convey the brand message in a way that is not commercial. I don’t need to have a schedule or a plan. It’s very organic.
Q. How do you measure ROI?
A. I don’t really measure ROI. ROI is something I feel. It’s not really a numbers game at this point. I measure my success by my engagement with my audience.
Q. What is your most successful campaign?
A. Creative hashtags – get trending and engage.
Q. How do you keep up with social media platforms?
A. You feel with your gut. I always say “If I don’t want to read that, why am I putting it out there?” You have to be excited about it. I carve my own road and it works for me. Don’t spread yourself thin.
Q. What is your goal with social media?
A. It’s our voice beyond our print ads. We want to bring fans into our brand. You have to make your brand have a voice and you have to innovate within the platform.
Some pointers:
- Look for the strengths of each channel and tailor communication to these strengths.
- Make your brand have a voice.
- Make campaigns with a common thread.
- Innovate within each platform.
- Be open to experimentation.
- Ask questions – aim to inspire.
- Have a sense of humor and have fun.
We hope that if you couldn’t make it to Fashion 2.0 last night this post helps you – it certainly gave us some things to think about.
